Problem
The Birmingham Award requires the assessment of short, free‑form reflective writing, which is time‑intensive to mark consistently and difficult to scale using traditional approaches.
Delivery
Through collaboration with the Careers Network, we developed and piloted an AI‑assisted approach that uses rubric‑aligned prompts to generate structured draft marks and feedback for short reflective essays, with outputs reviewed by assessors.
Outcome
The work demonstrated that generative AI can reliably augment the assessment of free‑form reflective writing, supporting consistent, human‑reviewed feedback and proving the viability of AI‑assisted marking in low‑stakes assessment contexts.
